Yangel Tamang is a young 24-year-old adventure enthusiast from Bhusuk, East Sikkim. Working for a tour & travel company, he is able to fulfill his passions for cycling, trekking, and hiking. Yangel says, “I am blessed and proud to have been born amidst the astounding valleys and one of the most tranquil places in India–Sikkim. I really enjoy cycling in the peaceful smooth trails of Bhusuk, which are surrounded by beautiful green forests, and I’m proud to show such beautiful parts of Sikkim to tourists.”

According to Yangel, the best route for cycling starts from the Bhusuk-pool and passes through 7th mile, 14th mile, Assam Lingchey, Zero, and Pakyong. Right now Yangel has a total of four mountain bikes with 9 gears, which he gives out on hire. People can hire the cycles for a day or two. Along with the cycles, Yangel also provides a pump and helmets. He says, “Even people who do not know how to ride cycles come and learn with their friends. It’s a great place to learn as not many vehicles pass by these roads.” He is happy to tag along if someone needs guidance or is a new learner.

There are many like him all over Sikkim but times have been hard lately because of the global Covid-19 pandemic that has shut such businesses down indefinitely. He pours his heart out and says, “I’ve faced many difficulties during this lockdown. My earnings have dipped to nothing and left me dependent on my parents.” With no income in hand, Yangel has now established a small gym room at his house to earn a living. He hopes that these sad times will pass soon and wishes to help people and make them happy again.

With no tourists coming to Sikkim now, he urges the locals to take up cycling. According to him not many local people have explored the beautiful parts of the state and to go for mountain biking in these areas with friends during weekends just adds to the joy of being amidst nature.
