Old Ghoom Monastery

Built in 1850, the Yiga Choeling or the Old Ghoom Monastery, constructed by monk Sokpo Sherab Gyatso, is the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery built in this region. It belongs to the yellow hact sect (Gelukpa) and is situated 8 km outside Darjeeling at an elevation of about 8000 ft above sea level. The major attraction here is the 15 feet high statue of the Maitreya Buddha made from clay from Tibet. This monastery was also significant during the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959 when many of the abbots fled here for refuge. The best time to visit the Old Ghoom Monastery is between Oct-Dec and Apr-Jun.

Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center

This center was established in 1959 to support the Tibetans who fled their homeland after occupation by China. It provided them with an outlet where they could produce and sell Tibetan handicrafts to generate an income. The workshops aren't as productive as they once were because most of the refugees have aged. However, various handcrafts are still sold on the premises, including rugs. One can even design their own rug or choose from the available designs. Visitors can also see an educational exhibition of old photos and documents dedicated to the Tibetan cause. The 30-minute tour of the Japanese Peace Pagoda, built by by Nichidatsu Fuji, a friend of Mahatma Gandhi, is a reminder to visitors of the precious lives lost in World War II. The Dali Gompa or the Druk Sangag Choeling—Monastery serves as the headquarters and the residence for Drukchen Rinpoche the XII and is home to more than 200 Buddhist monks. Inaugurated in 1993 by His Holiness Dalai Lama, it is the largest complex in this region and houses a library containing important Buddhist texts of the Kargyupa sect. You can easily spend half a day on these activities interacting with the lamas, taking a stroll, having a cup of butter tea or even meditating.

More than 80 tea gardens carpet the hills around Darjeeling and any trip there wouldn't be complete without visiting a few. Happy Valley Tea Estate is the most famous tea garden. It's only five minutes from town, making it invariably visited by tourists. The estate has a long history dating back to 1850 and grows among the finest organic teas in the region. For an additional 50 rupees, you can get dressed up in a traditional Nepali outfit and pose in the tea gardens. An hour and a half south of Darjeeling, you'll find some outstanding tea gardens near Kurseong. These include Makaibari Tea Estate (which produces some of the rarest and most expensive tea in the world), Castleton (which actually has a castle of sorts and has been owned by Kolkata royalty) and sprawling Ambootia Tea Estate (their organic Darjeeling black tea is highly regarded). Nuxalbari Tea Estate. This commendable tea estate is only 15 minutes from the airport. It's owned and run by women, and is the first large tea estate in India to produce "Certified Elephant Friendly Tea". Elephants are free to pass through the tea gardens! Tea festival is a small celebration that takes place in November and December in Darjeeling and Sikkim. Some plantations also allow you to dress up like tea-pluckers and pluck tea. The best time to visit tea-plantations in Darjeeling is between Apr-Jun and Nov-Dec each year.

Darjeeling Rangit Valley Ropeway

The Darjeeling-Rangit valley Ropeway was constructed and opened to the public in 1968. Since then it has been a major draw for tourists and locals alike. The ropeway is located at Singamari and is at an elevation os about 7000 feet above sea level. "The Bengal Natural History Museum, first established in 1903 under directives of Lord Curzon was once an Bengal Natural Museum Society undertaking and then went under the upkeep of teh Forest Department, till finally it has now been handed over to the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park authorities for maintenance and upkeep. The new location is inside the Zoological Park in Darjeeling itself. This provides a fascinating insight into the diverse flora and fauna of this region. It houses an extensive taxidermy-collection of mammals, birds & nests with eggs, reptiles, fish and insects of many varieties, namely 4300, covering a wide spectrum of the Himalayan fauna and Bengal wildlife. It is equally important from an archaeological perspective. There is also a small library in the Museum building and houses with many rare and valuable books including 125 volume series of 'The fauna of British India'. It is closed on Thursdays and on National Holidays.

DHR Ghoom Museum

Founded in the year 2000, the DHR Ghoom Museum was constructed to showcase the heritage of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Toy Train. The DHR Ghoom Museum is one of the three museums established Darjeeling district for the same. The other two are located at Kurseong and Sukna. The museum though small, owns some rare artifacts, photographs, and the oldest Toy Train Engine, ‘Baby Sivok’, that started its operation in 1881 providing the first ever rail link through the mountains.There are also items donated by railway employees like spare uniform too that add to the rich history of the Himalayan railways. The museum room is located right above the Ghum/ Ghoom station, which is the country's highest railway station at an altitude of 7400 feet above sea level.
