5 AMAZING MOVIES

(1) Riding solo to the top of the world

This documentary film is shot by Gaurav Jani as he takes a solo bike ride from Mumbai to the remote Changthang Plateau, in Ladakh. Moments of beauty, hardships, and spiritual triumphs are captured beautifully in this film. His interaction with the Chang pas of the region, attending the Hemis festival that comes once in 12 years, and shooting inside the Chemur Monastery (the first for a camera to have entered the premises) are some reasons to watch this documentary. 

(2) One week

This Canadian drama film follows the journey of a young man who cross-country treks across Canada on a vintage motorcycle in search of the meaning of life after he’s been diagnosed with cancer. 

(3) Long way round

This docuseries follows actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman as they set out to tour around the world on BMW bikes. They traverse through places such as Siberia, Mongolia, and Alaska before ending the trip in New York. 

Rent a bike in Sikkim

(4) Somewhere else tomorrow

This interesting movie is about 2 bikers who attempt to circumnavigate the world on his motorcycle, surviving only on the money they make along the way. This exposes them to different cultures along the way. 

(5) The motorcycle diaries

This biopic traces the motorcycle journey of 23-year-old “Che” Guevara and his friend as they ride across South America.

5 MUST-READ BOOKS 

(1) Why we ride- Mark Barnes

The author is a motorcycling clinical psychologist so you can expect plenty of helpful insights in this book. Divided into 3 parts, he shares common experiences of riders, sports psychology, and a thematic analysis of motorcyclists’ motivations. 

                       

(2) Jupiter’s travels- Ted Simon

This book covers the bike journey of Ted Simon, a British journalist in the ‘70s. Covering 63,000 miles on a 500cc Triumph T100-P, Ted passes through 54 countries in 4 years and encounters numerous failures, war, uprisings, and even prison life. An adventure that eventually turns into a journey of awakening, this is a must-read. 


(3) Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance- Robert M. Pirsig

The best-selling philosophy book in the ‘70s, it traces the road trip the author takes with his friends and son on a 1966 Honda Super Hawk. The journey is both personal and philosophical, with many readers finding it both powerful and helpful.

                      

(4) Rebuilding the Indian- Fred Haefele

Chiefly on the restoration of a 1941 Indian Chief motorcycle from a box full of parts, the book also covers mid-life crisis, fatherhood, and the joys and sadness of everyday life. 

(5) One man caravan- Robert Edison Fulton

Riding a two-cylinder Douglas motorcycle, Robert Edison attempts on a world tour in 1932-1933, making his way from London to the colonial Middle East; some of the places he passes do not exist anymore. More than the routes, the book is about people and societies.
