A few offbeat destinations accessible to adventure junkies in Meghalaya is the Wari Chora, an outwardly river canyon located in Garo hills is a place to visit. Wari Chora is a small village situated in the Meghalaya Garo hills surrounded by lush green forests. As a local guide from the region explained: Wari of Wari Chora means a deep river or a depression in the river. Garo hills are home to the Garo tribe, which is known for its unique culture and tradition. They have a rich history and deep connection with the land and their way of life revolves around nature. 

HOW TO REACH WARI CHORA?

Meghalaya is a very popular destination in Northeast India and easily accessible from Guwahati (Assam). Wari Chora is 450 km from Guwahati. From Shillong, it is 450 km away.

1. By air: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati is the nearest airport. Situated approximately 241 km away, this airport serves as a convenient entry point. From Guwahati, the journey to Wari Chora takes around 6-7 hours via the route through Dudhnoi. Several transportation options, such as taxis and private cars, are available for hire to embark on this road trip.

2. By road: Traveling by road offers the flexibility to soak in the beauty of the surroundings at your own pace. 

From Guwahati, you can embark on an approximately 6-7-hour road trip to reach Emangre village, the gateway to Wari Chora. Ensuring a comfortable and hassle-free journey, it’s advisable to hire a private car or taxi to experience the scenic wonders en route.

From Shillong, you can embark on a bus or sumos which ply in the morning and evenings. On reaching Tura, you can rent a private vehicle till Wari Chora. The route is about 280 km and would roughly take 7-8 hours.

3. By Train: If you enjoy train journeys, then you can travel to Dudhnoi from Guwahati. Dudhnoi serves as a convenient railhead, connecting travelers to Wari Chora. Upon reaching Dudhnoi, you can continue the journey via road transportation options like taxis or private cars, which cover the remaining distance. The picturesque landscapes along the way make the road trip from Dudhnoi an experience to cherish.

WHERE TO STAY?

When it comes to accommodation in Wari Chora, it’s important to note that the area is relatively far from Shillong and other major cities or towns. Therefore, staying overnight is a convenient and recommended option for those looking to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of the place.

While accommodation options may be limited, there are a few homestays available in nearby villages such as Dabalgre and Emangre. These homestays offer a unique opportunity to experience the warm hospitality and local culture of the Garo people. Staying in a homestay allows visitors to connect with the community, enjoy authentic meals, and gain insights into the traditional way of life.

Note: Due to the remote location of Wari Chora, it’s advisable to make prior arrangements and book accommodations in advance. This ensures a hassle-free stay and guarantees a comfortable resting place after a day of exploration.

Although the accommodation options may be limited in Wari Chora, the charm of the place lies in its untouched natural beauty and the opportunity to disconnect from the busyness of everyday life. So, embrace the tranquility and make the most of your stay in this hidden gem of Meghalaya.

BEST TIME TO VISIT 

The optimal time to explore Wari Chora is from November to February. During these months, the weather is delightful, characterized by pleasant temperatures and dry conditions. 

With temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C, the climate creates a comfortable environment for outdoor activities and nature walks.

The monsoon season, from June to September, should be avoided when planning a visit to this place. During this period, the roads are inaccessible and outdoor activities are closed during this time.
