Tawang Monastery, the largest in India

Tawang is famous for its many years old Monastery. Many people from many places come to visit this Tawang monastery. Tawang Monastery is located in Tawang city of Tawang district in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh in close proximity to the Tibetan and Bhutanese border. Tawang Monastery is the largest Buddhist monastery of India and it is also one of the second largest monasteries in Asia. It is an important pilgrim hub for the followers of Buddhism. Apart from its religious significance, Tawang is also famous for its natural attractiveness, which attracts and enchants the tourist. The Tawang Monastery is located in the Valley of Tawang River. The collection of the monastery has valuable old scriptures, primarily Kangyur and Tengyur.

As per the history, the Tawang Monastery or the Tawang Gompa is also referred to as Galden Namgyal Lhatse in Tibetan which translates to "celestial paradise in a clear night." The Tawang Monastery is the heart of the Lamaistic faith of the Mahayana school of Buddhism in the north-eastern region. Tawang Monastery is not only a religious center for the residents of Tawang but is also home to over 300 monks. A different kind of festivals are organized in the monastery and at the festival is the Torgya Festival which is organized during the month of January and famed masked dances are must-see during this festival. From a Tawang town, taxi services are available to reach Tawang Monastery and a tourist cable car is also available.

Tawang is easily accessible by road. The nearest airport is Tezpur airport of Assam, from Tezpur airport, one needs to travel by road. The nearest railway station is Bhalukpong and from Bhalukpong, one needs to travel by road to reach Tawang. Another easily accessible airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport of Guwahati, Assam. Most of the travelers travel to Tawang via road from Guwahati. The best time to visit Tawang is during the months of March to June, September, and October because the temperature remains comfortable and it pleasant. During winter it is very cold and most of the time the roads are blocked due to heavy snowfall. So it is better to visit during the summer and the onset of the monsoon season.
