The ancient temple of Tripura which is known as Matabari or Tripura Sundari is one of the important and recognized attractions of Tripura. It is situated upon a small hillock of tortoise-back shaped and the tortoise hump resembles ‘Kurma’ and this shape is called Kurmaprsthakrti which is considered to be the holiest possible site for a Shakti temple hence it is also called Kurma Pitha. Matabari means Mother Goddess and it is considered one of the 51 peeths the holy sites of Hindu Pilgrimage. The Tripura Sundari Temple which is famously known as Matabari is the holiest Hindu Pilgrimage site and the temple is more than 500 years old which was built in 1501 AD by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya at Udaipur which was once a capital of Tripura kingdom. Goddess Tripura Sundari is an avatar of Parvati the consort of Lord Shiva, the principal deity of the state. A curious legend surrounds its origins and why is this one of the places people sought after. Tripura's King Dhanya Manikya of the 15th century is said to have a dream ordering him to establish a temple dedicated to the goddess on the hilltop. As the king had already dedicated the site to Lord Vishnu he could not fulfill the signs he had received in the dream, because lord Vishnu & Parvati could not share the abode. The dreams kept on coming to the king repeatedly until the king gave in to the Demands of God, the king did as he was bid. The Goddess is served by traditional Brahmin priests. The place is at a distance of 4 kilometers from Udaipur and almost 56 kilometers away from Agartala Matabari. Anyone traveling to offer a prayer or during a visit to holiest place can see that in the temple there are two similar black stone ideals of Goddess with different size, the large and more prominent which is 5 feet tall in hight is of Goddess Tripura Sundari and the smaller one which is 2 feet tall is an idol of Chhota Ma which means Little Mother. It is said and believed that the smaller black stone idol was carried by the kings of Tripura to the battlefield. Many people visit the holy place and especially people visit every year on the occasion of Diwali where a famous Mela takes place near the temple.
