The Hayagriva Madhava Temple was build in order to punish the demons Madhu and Kaitava who has stolen the Vedas from Lord Brahma as per the Hindu mythology and it is also believed that in the year of 1583 the current structure of the temple was built by the King Radhudeva Narayan but some historians have a different opinion and they say that in the 6th century the emperor of the Pala Dynasty had constructed the temple. For the followers of Buddha, they have their own opinion and they believed this temple is a sacred place for Buddhism because these were the place where Buddha had attained Nirvana.
The Hayagriva Madhava Temple has three main parts the top of the shikhara, the centre and the basement, the shikhara or the top is pyramid-shaped. The base of the structure consists of huge brick pillars and there is a spacious entrance hall in the front. It is also believed that this structure was once destroyed by Kalapahar, and was later resurrected in 11th century CE. At this imposing temple, the presiding deity is Vishnu, worshipped in the sanctum sanctorum as an idol carved of black stone. Four other stone idols are also in worship as subsidiary deities. Another striking feature of the temple is the continuous row of elephants carved on the lowest level of the temple walls - a structure akin to the stone cut temple of Ellora. It is one of the places where the Hindu and the Buddhist offers a prayer.
