The port city of Guwahati was once a hub for anyone journeying onwards to the northeastern states. But even though every state now has its own airport, Guwahati still attracts thousands of visitors every year for the many things it offers for all kinds of visitors. The Brahmaputra river cruise and unique temples are some popular attractions. 


By air: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, also known as Guwahati International Airport. 

By rail: Guwahati Junction is the major railway station of Guwahati. Kamakhya Junction is the second largest station of the city. 

By road:  National Highway 31.

Temple tour: Guwahati is also known as the “city of temples” and for good reason. Each temple is unique with Kamakhya Temple being one of the famous ones. The Ambubachi Mela held at Kamakhya Temple attracts thousands of devotees each year. Other temples include Umananda Temple, Lankeshwar Temple, Ugratara Temple, and Navagraha Temple.

The cheapest way to get around is by city bus. Other modes of travel are autos, taxis, and ferries for some places.

The best time to visit Guwahati is between October to March when the state experiences pleasant weather. April and May are the summer months, and although it is hot, it is when the Bahag Bihu festival is celebrated. Avoid the monsoon months from June till September.

Assamese food is best characterised by the combination of vegetables with fish or meat. Most of the food is either boiled or steamed. A few traditional dishes that you need to try include masor tenga, khar, pitika, pani hamuk, paro mangxo, and duck curry.

Fancy Bazaar: Looking for traditional attire? This is the place to shop. You can buy the traditional saree, gamcha (thin shawl), and jappi (cap made of bamboo). Home decor products made of tambul and betel nut make for unique souvenirs and gifts. 

Paltan Bazar: This market is popular for bamboo products. You can also buy traditional clothes here.
