If you do golf is a precision club-and-ball sport, in which competing players using many types of clubs, attempt to hit balls into each hole on a golf course while employing the fewest number of strokes. It is one of the few ball games in the world which doesn’t need a standardized playing area with every course being different in shape and size. Although this game has been played over thousands of years the origin of modern day golf can be traced to Scotland where it was played in the 15th century. In this write-up we shall discuss some of the basic things that you need to know to play golf.
Players – There are no as such rules on the number of players in a game of golf. Since the competitors known as golfers compete simultaneously there can be any number of players playing in a golf course. Amateurs play in a 9 hole course whereas professionals play in a 18 hole course.
Golf Equipment – The basic equipment that you require to play golf is a ball and a club. You won’t need to purchase a complete golf kit when you start. However, if you are serious about playing then buying a good set of clubs, balls and a golf bag is essential. The attire that you wear in a golf course also matters and there are certain golf courses which have rules on the kind of dress you are allowed to wear and play.
Scoring – Understanding the scoring system of golf can be tricky for a beginner. You will be lost in terms such as birdies, pars, eagles and fail to understand the plus and minuses. The scoring pattern in golf is comparative to a pre-arranged score of the course also known as ‘par’. A par is nothing but the number of shots it should take you to get around the course. You can hit above the score which is under par or below the score which is over par. Specific par score is attached to each hole in a golf score. Generally each course has a par score of around 70 to 72 with most holes having 3 to 5 par associated with them.
Eagle, Birdie, Albatross – These are terms that you might have come across in television or in a golf course while watching the game. If you score one shot below par like hitting a par three in two shots it is known as a birdie. If you hit two shots below the par that it is known as an eagle. It is only in rare cases than one hit an albatross which is hitting three shots below par. At the end of the day the lower your overall score the better you have done.
Caddy – If you are seriously taking to golf and play in a large course you will need the service of a caddy. He or she is a person who carries your bag and clubs, and gives you insightful advice and moral support. A good caddy is aware of the challenges and obstacles of the golf course being played, along with the best strategy in playing it.
Summary: Golf is one of the most popular sports in the world. The game which originated in Scotland is played by a varied age group. To play you need some golf equipmentHealth Fitness Articles, but you dont need to buy a whole kit when you start.
