When you begin cycling, what are the essential things you need?

It may seem obvious, but before you worry about any other cycle gear, you'll need a bike! If you don't already have one, what sort of bike is best for you? It's common for people to opt for a mountain bike, without really thinking, but look at the options before you buy. A specialist bike shop will always be happy to advise you. If you do go for a mountain bike, think about the tyres. Off-road tyres can make for heavy-going, especially on the road. You'll end up putting in a lot more effort, just to cover the same distance. Look at hybrid tyres, they're designed as a good compromise, for road and off-road use. And, don't dismiss an old-fashioned road bike, or a hybrid bike. It might seem less sporty, but it could suit your needs a lot better.

A helmet is the next must-have. Nobody wants to wear one, but you'd be a fool not to. It could save your life, so invest in a good one, and wear it. Remember, a damaged helmet is useless. Don't adopt an old one, or buy second-hand, it's a false economy. Also, think about protecting other parts of your body, like elbows and knees, with pads and body armour. And, wear something brightly-coloured, especially if you're going out in traffic.

Of all the accessories, a water bottle is the most important. Get a handy cage, so it's always there when you need a drink. Especially in summer, hydration is crucial. If you're on a long ride, you could lose a lot of fluid. That'll reduce your performance, and it might make you ill. Other accessories, like bags, are always useful for keeping keys, phones and energy bars. And, if you're leaving your bike anywhere, don't forget to lock it up. You'll need a good security device, so your bike doesn't get stolen.

As long as you wear something visible in traffic, clothing is more about comfort and style. The little things make a big difference. Invest in a decent pair of gloves, and get some good cycle shoes. Then, you can think about all the amazing cycling garments available.

Finally, when you start cycling, you will get a sore bottom. Don't be put off, this'll go away after a while. Cycling shorts will helpArticle Submission, they'll allow you to enjoy your ride a lot better.
