Your adventure begins the minute you step outside the airport and into your booked car.
From the plains of Siliguri to the rolling hills of Darjeeling, you will experience a pleasant change in weather and scenery.
The change in terrain shifts dramatically within ½ hour into the drive. During the upward ascent, you can capture spectacular views of the hills and small hillside towns. There are many restaurants located conveniently near the road, which beckon travellers to halt for a quick lunch or light refreshments; needless to say, they all provide stunning views!
Somewhere along the way, you will notice railway tracks. These run parallel to the road for long stretches till you reach Darjeeling town. If you are a first-timer to Darjeeling, then consider this as your introduction to Darjeeling’s most important feature: Darjeeling Himalayan Railway or Toy Train. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as DHR or Toy Train, is a 2 ft gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. The train crosses 14 stations. Towards the end of the route, the train passes through Ghoom, considered India’s highest station. You will pass this station on your way too. A train is usually stationed here ready to depart. You can halt here for a while, explore the stationery toy train, take a photograph or two, and proceed to your hotel.
Darjeeling by Toy Train
A ride on the steam train is an experience not to be missed. Once in Darjeeling, you can opt for a joy ride that entails a round trip from Darjeeling to Ghum. The train halts at Batasia Loop for 10 minutes and then at Ghum for 30 minutes, to let you leisurely visit the DHR Railway Museum. TourGenie can book these tickets for you in advance.
