Murlen National Park is situated close to the Indo - Myanmar border of Champhai District about 245 km from Aizawl and is close to the Chin Hills. It was established as a National Park in the year of 1991. Murlen National Park is well known for being one of the few remaining refuges of Mizoram state bird, Vavu (Mrs Hume's Pheasant). Covering 100 sq km of virgin forests, the park consists of sub-tropical evergreen forest and sub-mountain forests which are home to various mammals and birds. There are also sheer rocky cliffs clustered with honey combs and a buzzing with swifts and swallows.

The wildlife includes Tiger, Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Serrow, Hollock Gibbon, Sambar, Barking Deer, and Wild Boar etc. There also exists a very large cave at one of the precipices, Thumkhuai Kham, where as many as 40 people could lodge in a night and has been frequented by different kinds of monkeys and other animals.

The area is protected and preserved by the state government and is the home for precious and endangered faunal and faunal species. The vegetation is administered of Quercus, Schima Wallichai, Betula Specie, Michelia Champaca, Pinus Khasia, Prunus, Myrica, rhododendron, Arundinania Callosa, Canes and variety of orchids.

Only about 1% of the sun’s ray can penetrate the forest on a sunny day. There is an area in the park where not even a single sun’s ray can penetrate. And for this reason the area has been known as ‘losing area of seven fellow-men’ or land of no return.

Several rivers, rivulets and brooks flow through this park providing abundant water to its existing wildlife. The forest cover of the Murlen Park is compared to that of the Amazons’ owing to its thickness. The best time of the year to visit the Murlen National Park is between the months of October to March.

The landscape dotted with several precipices and slopes is also perfect to go trekking and bird watching, but remember to take a guide along because several areas could be unsafe for visit.
