Darap Village is one of the few places which could still be called offbeat where the visitor can escape from the crowded touristic places. The word Darap is originated from the limbo word ’Tan-lop’ which literally means a plain or even land. This beautiful village is located just 8 km from Pelling, the main town of West Sikkim and it is on the way to Khecheopelri and Yuksam. The area is mainly inhabited by the Limboo Community and other small communities like the Bhutias, Chettris, Tamangs, Rais, Gurungs and Lepchas live in harmony. Darab Village is one of the beautiful scenic villages of West Sikkim and it is visited by those kinds of travellers who want to spend quality time with nature, who loves the calming ambience, the paddy fields, adventure activities and want a feeling of peace and tranquillity. Darab Village is also a base for many hiking and trekking routes which are in and around Pelling. A few plantations of millet, cardamom, and corns are done in this village. Unlike many other locations in the West Sikkim the landscape is gently sloped and the Darap Village has now become one of the must-visit destinations for Village Tourism.
There are various ways to engage in the beautiful Darab Village like milking the cows in the morning and evening; interaction with the local children; processing butter and cheese; gardening in the fields; walking in the villages and nearby streams; hiking to other nearby villages; engaging in the daily activities of the village people, and a visit to the 200-year-old Limboo traditional house. This ancient structure, with solid mud floors and tar-encrusted ceilings from the constantly burning fire, has been passed down from generation to generation of Nepali Limboo tribesmen.
The closest airport is in Bagdogra airport which is approximately 150 kilometres away, whereas the closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri railway station which is approximately 140 kilometres away. Both the airport and the railway station are in Siliguri in West Bengal. Since Darap village is one of the offbeat destinations of West Sikkim, hence the option of accommodation is very limited with basic amenities, there are very few homestays offering an amazing view of the surroundings.
