Many camper trailers will have a propane system implemented in their design.  Though the use of propane can provide a wide variety of uses to campers, it also opens the door to a greater need for safety.  From the requirements associated with having pressurized, combustible gas on your campsite to the dangers of fires in the surrounding areas, those that enjoy propane grills or heating mechanisms will want to take note of some of the points keyed below to ensure that the camping area remains lush for future visitors and that safety is assured for everyone currently around the tanks and equipment.
Tank Condition
Knowing when it’s time to replace your propane tank is very important in propane safety.  If you see that your tank has dents, rust, or any other signs of wear in the connection area, replace it immediately.  Accidents can occur when you don’t take the necessary time to inspect your gas apparatus before transport or use.  If you are using propane for grilling, remember that grease can drop down onto the flow knob, causing a fire hazard every time you ignite the grill itself.
Proper Lighting Techniques
Lighting your propane grill or heating mechanism requires your full attention.  Any ignition equipment should be clean and in good condition.  Be sure that the tank is away from any other fire that may be on the campsite.  If you find that the ignition switch it not doing the job, DO NOT attempt to light the system with a match.  While this may be common practice for some, the ramifications of an old or dirty ignition switch can be disastrous.
Heating the Camping Area
One common use of propane for campers involves heating the camping area.  Whether you are using a heating lamp that is designed to heat the tent or simply the surrounding areas, always be sure that your tent is made of flame-retardant material.  It is never recommended that a heater be placed directly inside or right next to any fabric, regardless of its flame resistant properties.  Use these tools for warming the outside area where everyone is sitting, nothing more.
Lighting Awareness
Before you ignite any propane item, always warn everyone that you are about to do so.  This will give everyone the tank’s full attention and ensure that should anything ignite unexpectedly that nearby individuals are ready for it.  We aren’t saying that everyone should duck for cover before you ignite, but ultimately, awareness can be very helpful if the ignition doesn’t go as planned.
Propane Storage
Storing your propane tanks in your camper trailer is one of the most important aspects of travelling with them.  Any impact that involves a spark can become a safety hazard, which is why you want to be sure that your camper is designed to properly store the tanks.  The size that you bring with you should match the recommended tank storage specifications of the trailer itself.  This will help to eliminate the risk for a “rolling tank” when in transit.  Small considerations like this will add extra layers of safety to the storage and containment of the pressurized propane.
Propane is a useful tool to bring with you when camping.  However, it can cause an array of safety issues if the users are not well-versed in the proper handling techniques of the tanks themselves.  By heeding the information above and consulting with your propane specialist, you’ll travel knowing that safety is at the forefront of every one’s mind.  If your camper trailer isn’t equipped to store a propane tankhttp://www.articlesfactory.com/pic/x, speak with your dealer about getting an addition that does.  It will save you plenty of hassle and assure everyone returns home safely.
