Bumla at Indo - China border in Zemithang

Bumla pass is a border meeting point of the army and from Tawang, the town in Arunachal Pradesh of India the Bumla Pass is situated almost 37 kilometer away. The Bumla Pass is an Indo- China border which is above 4200m above sea level which means 15200 ft above sea level.

Between the two communities in Tawang and Tsona Dzong Bumla Pass formed the traditional trade route and the route was closed in the year of 1962 when Sino – Indian war took place at Bumla and this war was one of the fiercest battles. The Bumla Pass was reopened after 44 years in the year of 2006 for trade and for visiting domestic tourists for which permission is required from the Indian Army and the borders guards are always happy to guide the visitors. From both, sides traders are allowed trade with permission from the Army officials. The road to Bumla is also one of the historical routes since it was the route takes by the Dalai Lama to get into India and take refuge. One can reach Bumla Pass via road but the road towards Bumla Pass is not in very good condition hence it is advised to travel in a vehicle type like, Innova or Tata Sumo or similar. Tata Sumo is good to travel on this kind of road and the road to Bumla is one of the most underhanded roads in India. On the way to Bumla one can visit Guru Nanakdevji’s Gurudwara where the Guru Nanakdevji stayed while returning from Tibet.

If a traveler travels to Tawang in their own car but for Bumla Pass it is suggested to hire a taxi like Tata sumo or similar from Tawang for the hassle-free holiday since only local jeep are allowed to get a pass for Bumla. To visit Bumla Pass an Indians required ILP (Inner Line Permit) whereas for Foreign nationals PAP (Protected Area Permit) is required. Without a permit even local vehicles are also not allowed to go to Bumla Pass since it is a border area so a permit is must and the one must arrange the permits one day in advance before the day of traveling and the visitors should handover the Xerox or scanned copy of the valid documents like Voter Card, Driving License or Passport and passport size photo at least 02 copies to the local travel agent during working days. It almost takes a whole day to arrange or get the permits.
