Perched on top of hills of the Eastern Himalayas, Darjeeling is a beautiful hill station located at a height of 7100 ft. Darjeeling got its name from the Dorjee (thunderbolt) ling (place), meaning the land where thunder struck.

For anyone who plans to visit Darjeeling, the two best time to visit Darjeeling, are between March to May, and the other between October to November. During these times the weather is clear with no rain, and the climate is generally cool, offering clear offering lovely views of snow peaks, making Darjeeling one of the best hill stations to visit.

Spring and Summer in Darjeeling

By end of February and March, summertime starts with spring setting in, and Darjeeling starts to come to its best. The hills around Darjeeling transforms with colourful blooms of rhododendron, magnolias, and a number of other flowers, and the skies are clear, offering wonderful views of the snow peaks. Summer is one of the best times to visit Darjeeling. During the summer months in Darjeeling, the day temperature is very comfortable with the need for only light woolens. This is also one of the best times in Darjeeling to experience its rich flora. April and May are the peak months for tourists to visit Darjeeling.

By beginning to mid-June, the rainy season usually sets in and lasts through mid-September. During this time most of the national parks and sanctuaries in Darjeeling and surrounding areas are closed (usually from June 15 to September 15). As a hill station, Darjeeling also has its share of landslides and road blockage during this time. This is not one of the best times to be visiting Darjeeling; however, if you love the rains and miss the lush-green rain-drenched mountains, monsoons in Darjeeling can turn out to be one of the best times to visit.

Early Winters

September marks the end of the rainy season and the starting of winters in Darjeeling Hills. The temperatures are pleasant, with clear skies and views of snow peaks. During October and November, Darjeeling again undergoes a transformation. This is also the best time to attend festivals in Darjeeling, with important festivals like Dasai and Tihar making this season one of the best times to visit Darjeeling. On the flip side, as it is the festival time, services in Darjeeling would not be up to the mark as most of the locals would be busy taking time off to celebrate their festival.

Winters in Darjeeling starts from November end – December and last up to February. Wintertime in Darjeeling can be extremely cold with foggy days. If you're looking forward to seeing snow, then you can witness it on the higher reaches of Darjeeling; one of the best places to see snow is at Tiger Hill located just 11 km from Darjeeling. Tourists visiting Darjeeling during wintertime is relatively low with the exception of Christmas and New Year; so if you're looking for a less-crowded winter getaway, then Darjeeling during winters is the best place to unwind.
