Menchukha or Mechuka as it is popularly known as is a valley located close to the Tibetan border in the northern reaches of Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh. The town of Mechuka is located along the Yargyap chu river at an elevation of 6000 feet, the entire valley is surrounded by Pine & Thorn bush covered mountains. In memba language men is medicine, chu is water and kha is the snow – which literarily means medicinal water of snow. The Valley is inhabited by the Memba and the Adi with a few Tagins tribals.
To promote this beautiful region a 3 days adventure and cultural festival is organized every year in the month of November - Adventure @ Mechuka. The festival was the brain child of Mr. Kiren Rijiju, Member Parliament and Minister for Sorts & Youth Affairs and was started in the year 2012. The festival is jointly organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India and Department of Tourism, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh through its event partners the Sub-Division Administration Mechukha, District Administration West Siang & CCRD Itanagar.
The festival is based around adventure activities with propelled glider and micro-light glider rides, aero-modeling, paragliding, trap shooting, mountain biking, river crossing, rappelling, rafting, trekking, zorbing and rock climbing. Competitive Angling in the local streams has also been added as a new feature during the later years. The evening is usually reserved for cultural performances and music; local musicians from Arunachal Pradesh along with national and international artists have performed here including likes of Adnan Sami. Food and local beverages are an integral part of any festival in this part of the country and Mechuka is no different, as there are plenty of food stalls and beverages available at the festival site.
Mechuka Village
Mechuka is approachable from Passighat with a night halt at Aalong, with the nearest Railway station at Murkongselek (Jonai) in Assam. Passighat has an airport but has connectivity with flights from Guwahati. Mohanbari airport at Dibrugarh connects with major cities in the country.
While at Mechuka do not forget to visit the 400 years old Samten Yongcha Monastery, a visit to the Siko Dido waterfall and the Mechuka Gurudawra besides hiking around the valley and crossing a number of hanging bridges.
There are a plenty of home stays available at Mechuka with plenty of camps sites which are put up during the festival time.
