Agartala is the second-largest city in northeast India after Guwahati. The city is blessed with a plethora of historical architecture and popular locations that one should not miss. Therefore, whenever you decide to visit Agartala, do make your way towards these places in the city.

 7 must-visit tourist places in Agartala:

(1) Ujjayanta Palace- The Cultural Heritage of Agartala

It is one of the most popular tourist places in Agartala. Ujjayanta Palace is situated at the centre of Agartala. This palace is surrounded by the busy markets of the city. It is located on the banks of a lake and is covered by the lush green gardens made by the Mughals.

Established in 1901, Ujjayanta Palace is the epitome of richness with magnificent tiled floors, wooden ceilings, and huge fancy doors. The palace got its name from Rabindranath Tagore, who was a regular guest of Tripura.

A few years back till 2011, this palace was used as the meeting place for the Tripura Legislative Assembly. However, now it is transformed into a museum, which has become a famous spot in Agartala. Visiting this museum will allow you to know the art, culture, and tradition of the city along with the traditions and customs of different communities living in the northeastern part of India. 

You will also find many Hindu temples dedicated to different Gods inside this huge palace such as Uma-Maheshwari, Kali, Lakshmi Narayan, and Jagannath. Thus, if you are planning your visit to Agartala, the Ujjayanta Palace should be on your checklist. 

(2) Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary- Best Place for Nature Lovers in Agartala

Located 25 kilometres away from the city, in Bishalgarh of Agartala, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a variety of fauna and birds. Over 100 species of residential and migratory birds can be found here. Moreover, this wildlife sanctuary is also an academic and research centre. While visiting this place, you will come across lakes where you can choose to do boating.

Other things to watch here are the orchid garden, botanical garden, zoo, elephant joy ride, rubber and coffee plantations etc. Thus, places like this one are simply perfect for any nature lover! Moreover, what makes this place famous is the presence of the rare spectacled monkey.

 (3) Tripura Sundari Temple- A Temple with Rich History in Agartala

The next one in the list is the Tripura Sundari Temple. This remarkable 500-year-old temple is located in Udaipur, which is nearly 55 km away from Agartala. It is one of the 51 Sakti Peethas, and what makes it unique is the belief that the right toe of Sati fell here. Another interesting fact about this temple is that it is in the shape of a tortoise. 

Due to its history, this beautiful temple is always full of people from different places throughout the year. If you happen to visit this temple during Diwali, you will come across devotees coming here to take bath in the fish-filled tank near the temple.

(4) Neermahal- The Floating Paradise in Agartala

Neermahal is also famously known as the “Lake Palace of Tripura”. It is the largest palace of its kind in the whole of India. It is the location of this palace that enhances its beauty. It is rightly located in the centre of Rudrasagar Lake. Talking about its history, it was built during the reign of King Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur especially created for the king and his family. The beautiful structure of the palace depicts its rich history.  

If you want to spend a beautiful evening out in Agartala, Neermahal is where you should be! There are a few water sports as well that you can try here. Isn’t that cool? Thus, we can say that this palace is a perfect combination of modern and classic. 

You can also be a part of the famous “Neermahal Water Festival,” which is a boat race. Thousands of people come here to participate every year.

(5) Jagannath Temple- A Place for Peace and Tranquility in Agartala

Jagannath Temple in Agartala was built by the Maharaja of Tripura of the Manikya Dynasty. It is located in the Ujjayanta Palace grounds, and people come here to worship the Hindu God Jagannath. The best part about this temple is its architectural beauty. Bright orange walls, curved pillars, and the octagon shape of the temple make the temple a treat to the eyes. If you are someone who loves to take photos with beautiful locations then you won’t regret visiting this temple. 

The architecture of this grand temple is greatly influenced by the Islamic style. If you visit this temple in the evening, you can be part of the evening aarti along with the Nitya Puja, Bhoga offerings, and distribution of prasad. The aartis are believed to be spectacular to watch. 

What else? The annual festival of the temple, which is the Rath Yatra is also a must-watch event in Agartala as it is celebrated with great devotion. You will see devotees coming from different places during the festival.

 (6) Chittangong Hills- Scenic Beauty in Agartala

The Chittangong Hills is one of the picturesque places of Agartala with its captivating landscape and surroundings. This hill has several small mountains, valleys, and even a small canyon that was created by the twisting movement of seven rivers. The view of the rivers, lush green trees, and the hills make it one of the must-watch places in Agartala.

(7) The Kunjaban Palace- A Palace with Intricate Designs in Agartala

Kunjaban Palace was built by King Birendra Kishore Manikya back in the year 1917. However, today it is the official residence of the Governor of Tripura. What makes it unique are the complex carvings on the structure of the palace. The beautiful gardens all around the palace make it a remarkable monument of Agartala.
