Brahmaputra boating cruise
Assam and its capital are famous for the Brahmaputra river, which in turn is famous for boating and rafting. You get boating and ferry cruises on the river in Guwahati and is ideal for a romantic day out.
Manas national park
Most wildlife tourists in Assam head to Kaziranga which is pretty close to Guwahati, but a budget option would be the Manas national park. The jungle safari held here is not quite so crowded and you’ll have a grand time spotting the huge variety of birds, and of course, the Royal Bengal Tiger. You can also book rooms for staying at this scenic wildlife reserve.
Assam Rajyik state museum
The Rajyik state museum holds 5000 objects on display ranging from prehistoric to Mughal, to WWII artefacts. It is maintained by the Assam government and is a worthwhile visit for all tourists to Guwahati. The museum is located next to the charming Dighaliphukhuri lake and adds to the scenic ambience. The items on display include sculptures, tribal artefacts, weaponry and other archaeological excavations including coins and copper engravings.
Chandubi Lake
The Chandubi lake is one of the most secluded destinations in Guwahati. It offers a beautiful view into the village life of Assam. This serene lake comes highly recommended by hotels in Guwahati near railway station. The Lakeside is ideal for a family day trip and is the best spot for picnicking if you want to avoid noisy crowds.
Regional Science Center and the Guwahati Planetarium
The Science Center in Guwahati is located in Khanapara, while the Planetarium on MG Road. Tourists get an impressive display of simple scientific experiments and is a fun place for the family. The Planetarium is slightly more educational but the incredible astronomical displays are truly worth the visit. The awe-inspiring insight into the innate workings of nature and the universe is a refreshing change of pace from the religious tourism that is mostly prevalent in Guwahati.
Sri Surya Pahar
Located just outside Guwahati, it is one of the best scenic hilltops in the region. The place is artfully scattered with natural sculptures and religious symbolism and makes for a perfect day trip that also gives you an adventurous vibe. It used to be a popular pilgrimage site but is now visited more often by tourists than religious folk.
The temples in the area are as incredible as the rest of the city, but Guwahati offers much more than a few idols worshiped in marvels of architecture. The scenic locations in the shadow of the mighty Himalayas are perfect for a weekend getaway.
